Tablecloth Sizing Guide

Tablecloth Sizing Guide

Trying to determine the best size tablecloth for your table? Or what combination of tables and tablecloths to use for your wedding reception or special event? See below for our handy guides on tablecloth sizing.

The "drop" is the length of tablecloth that will hang over the side of your table. A short drop is appropriate for a dining room table or home use. For more formal affairs such as banquets or wedding receptions, it is common to have a longer drop, often reaching to the floor. It is important that your tablecloth drop not be more than the height of your table, or your guests will have extra material they may step or trip on.

All of the green highlighted combinations below are appropriate tablecloth sizes for a given table size. Our Sparkles Make It Special recommendation is in bold.

Rectangular Tablecloth Guide

All measurements assume normal table height of 30". All rectangular tables assume a width of 30". Shown below are the most common table and tablecloth sizes.

This first section matches common non-fitted polyester tablecloths to each table size. These tablecloths are one single piece of fabric that you lay across the table, centering it such that equivalent lengths (or drops) of tablecloth hang over the long and short sides of the table. High-quality tablecloths typically feature folded over hems (sometimes called piped edges).

Fitted Tablecloth Guide

Another common tablecloth option is to purchase fitted tablecloths. Fitted tablecloths are sewn together such that hard creases are already present along the corners of your table. Fitted tablecloths ensure a consistent drop all the way to the ground around your entire table, and typically feature serged edges.

Fitted tablecloths come in both polyester or spandex. Polyester fitted rectangular tablecloths are a more traditional fabric choice for dining and banquet tables. Spandex fitted rectangular tablecloths are appropriate for serving tables, presentation tables or bars, but NOT for tables where guests will be seated. Spandex tablecloths fit very tight, and while it presents an attractive look for your event, it is not appropriate for a dining table as guests would not be able to fit their chair and legs under the table. Spandex tablecloths include sewn in pockets for securing the tablecloth to the legs of the table.

Cocktail Table Tablecloth Guide

Cocktail high-top tables most commonly have 30" diameters, and are approximately 42" tall. Covering a cocktail table with a spandex fitted tablecloth provides an elegant look to your event. Because cocktail tables are most often used when standing or using stools, tight form-fitting spandex is a more appropriate covering then polyester fabric tablecloths.

Cocktail tables tend to either have a single center post (I-Style Base) or have multiple legs that cross in the middle (X-Style Base). It is important to know whether your cocktail tables will have an I-Style Base or an X-Style Base. The difference is that at the bottom of the spandex tablecloth, there will be pockets for 4 legs (X-Style Base) or for a more simplified I-Style Base.
